Impact of Sustainability Strategies on Heritage Conservation Practice

Buchanan Complex, University of British Columbia.

The 6th Montreal Round Table (2011) examined the impact of sustainability strategies on heritage conservation practice in Canada and abroad. The topic took into account an evolving definition of sustainable development that has shifted from a concept to protect biodiversity and the physical environment to one that includes cultural diversity. The subject raised new research questions for the field of conservation. Participants sensed a shifting paradigm that will require heritage conservation specialists to move towards the mainstream and to devise ways of quantifying the contribution to sustainability of conserving existing heritage.
