2016 Mechtild Rössler, “World Heritage Sites under threat by terrorists and UNESCO’s response”

To open the Chair’s Montreal Round Table, Mechtild Rössler, Director of the Division for Heritage and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, and research associate at EGHO, France presented a public lecture on 9 March 2016, about World Heritage Sites under threat by terrorists and UNESCO’s response. After presenting current examples of deliberate attacks on World Heritage Sites, Rössler outlined UNESCO’s response which includes mobilizing forces to stop illicit trafficking of cultural objects, preparing for post-conflict interventions by building knowledge, undertaking integrated planning initiatives and sensitising the public through the social media campaign #Unite4heritage.
